Use ground turkey in a new way with this Turkey Picadillo recipe! This Latin American hash is full of sweet mango flavor. Use leftovers in tacos or empanadas.
Every now and then I like to surprise my family with a new meal. It’s always easy to run to our tried and true classics like easy lasagna and chicken soup.
I am always a little unsure of setting down something new on the table, but 99.9% of the time when I do, the kids eat it and love it.
This Turkey Picadillo recipe is one of our new favorites!
What is picadillo?
Picadillo is a Latin American recipe traditionally made with ground beef and tomatoes. It is eaten like a hash or as a filling to tacos or empanadas.
The picadillo we are sharing today uses ground turkey instead of beef. It also adds a twist by adding chickpeas, peppers and mango. Sweet mango! It’s delicious.
How to Make Picadillo
This easy dinner recipe takes under 30 minutes to make. This recipe works great as a meal prep recipe. Make it on Sunday and it should keep well in the fridge for most of the week (if you can keep out of it that long!).
- Over medium high heat warm oil and add in onions, pepper, mango, garlic, and salt and pepper. Saute for 3-4 minutes, or until onions and peppers begin to soften.
- Add in the ground turkey. (You can use beef, chicken or pork if you’d like. Just make sure it is lean.)
- Cook ground turkey, turning occasionally, for 6-7 minutes, or until browned.
- After ground turkey has browned, add in remaining ingredients. Lower heat to medium and allow sauce and turkey to simmer for an additional 5-6 minutes for flavors to infuse.
- Lastly, add in additional salt and pepper, as needed according to the taste that you’d like.
- Serve warm.
What to Serve Picadillo With
Although you can serve this just in a bowl, there are other fun ways to dish this up!
Serve with:
- flour tortillas as a filling for tacos or burritos
- filling for empanadas
- toppings for tostadas
- rice
- fried potatoes (stir fried potatoes in at the very end so they are crispy)
- black beans or pinto beans
- fried eggs at breakfast!
This is a great leftovers recipe. We almost love the recipe more the next day as the flavors have time to blend.
Can you freeze picadillo?
Honestly you probably could, but ours never lasts that long. It will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days. There are so many ways to serve this, so we always end up using it up instead of freezing it.
