About our Slow Cooker Ham and Beans

When I was a kid, beans were one thing I would not eat. Mom would even make us chili without beans. But as an adult, I can’t get enough of beans! Calico beans, 3 bean baked beans and black bean soup to name a few.

After the Easter or Christmas holiday hams, I’m always looking for ways to use up leftovers. Ham and bean soup is one of my favorites, and this one is extra easy because it’s made in the slow cooker.

I’d serve this crockpot ham and beans with an antipasto salad, fruit salad, and a carrot cake bar for dessert.

Enjoy! – Julie

Ingredients Needed

ingredients for ham and beans on a table

  • Beans. Great northern beans are the perfect size for this recipe. You could also use navy beans or cannellini beans.
  • Chicken broth. I prefer to use low sodium chicken broth. If you have a ham bone or a piece of ham like ham hock or ham shank, use that to make ham broth. Even more of that salty ham flavor. Yum!
  • Diced ham. This is a great use of leftover ham that might be in your fridge from Easter or even in your freezer! The ham gets extra tender in the crock pot, just like it does in our ham pot pie.

What to Serve with Ham and Beans

This ham & bean soup recipe is whole meal on its own. I prefer it in a bowl with a piece of buttery cornbread on the side. Our apple cornbread adds a touch of sweetness.
