Slow Cooker Mashed Potatoes in a bowl

Slow cooker potatoes can come in handy during holiday meal prep because it freezes up the stovetop and oven. But these easy weeknight potatoes are perfect for just about any night.

Do potatoes cook in a slow cooker?

Yes! Potatoes cook really well in a slow cooker. You’ll want to be sure to add liquid to the slow cooker. In this case we use chicken broth to cook the potatoes in. It gives them delicious flavor.

Depending on the size of potato cubes you cut, the potatoes will take about 4-6 hours to cook in the slow cooker.

What potatoes are best for mashing?

You want to use a high starch potato for the best mashed potatoes. For this recipe we used Yukon Gold. You can also use Russet.

What to Add to Mashed Potatoes

What gives mashed potatoes the best flavor? Here are our favorite add ins:

  • Butter (Why did we even have to say it)
  • Garlic (Because garlic mashed potatoes are greater than all other)
  • Heavy Cream (We use heavy cream as a secret ingredient for everything.)
  • Cheddar Cheese. (This adds flavor and a little color and creaminess.)

If you’re really feeling crazy, add a little spinach or even some cabbage. These recipes are delicious and a great way to add veggies to your dinner.

What can I use to mash potatoes without a masher?

If you don’t have a potato masher, you can use an immersion blender, hand held mixer (on low speed) or just a large fork. The potatoes should be soft enough that they easily mash with just about any kitchen tool.

Can I keep mashed potatoes warm in a slow cooker?

Yes. If you need to keep these potatoes warm for a little while before serving, you can do that.

Keep the slow cooker on low heat (or even on the “Keep Warm” setting) for up to 3 hours. Stir the potatoes every now and then to keep the heat inside even.
