The best Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwiches! Popular in the midwest, these creamy chicken & stuffing sandwiches are made in the slow cooker.
Long ago when the kids were little, I used to make a creamy chicken & stuffing in the slow cooker. With 3 kids under the age of 4, I didn’t have a lot of time, so throwing chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup and stuffing in a slow cooker was my go-to. It was easy and the kids loved it!
Fast forward about 15 years later and I started hearing about the “Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwich” at church gatherings. A friend brought it to a potluck and I was surprised to find out that what I was making all along and serving over rice, people stuffed in a hamburger bun. Who knew these sandwiches were so popular?
Why you’ll love this recipe:
- Uses fresh chicken breasts.
- Only 4 ingredients.
- Easy made in the slow cooker.
- Perfect for potlucks and servings crowds.
- Endless recipe variations!
Where did Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwiches come from?
From what I understand, shredded chicken sandwiches are a very regional dish. Some in Ohio have never heard of them, but others eat them at every potluck. They are popular at local diners and restaurants that serve lunch sandwiches. And there are countless ways to make them! This shredded chicken recipe in the crockpot is our favorite, but I’ll share all variations so you can make these exactly how your family likes.
How to Make Shredded Chicken Sandwiches
- Place the chicken breasts in the slow cooker. Pour the condensed soup overtop.
- Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours or until the chicken is shreddable.
- Shred the chicken, then add the stuffing mix.
- Mix well, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the bread crumbs are moistened.
Recipe Variations
- Use ritz crackers in place of the stuffing mix. You’ll get a slightly different, more simple flavor since the Ritz crackers are not seasoned.
- Use cream of mushroom soup in place of cream of chicken soup.
- If youโd like the mixture thinner, add a little bit of chicken broth until it is the consistency youโd like.
- Some even use potato chips instead of stuffing! They help to thicken the mixture, add texture and flavor.
- Some make this recipe even quicker by using canned chicken. If you do this, just heat the mixture through on the stovetop or in the microwave…you don’t have to wait for the chicken to cook!
- Add minced onion for more flavor.
- Add some shredded cheese if you’d like…or add a slice of cheese when you are making the sandwich. We like swiss!
- Make this low sodium by using a low sodium soup and stuffing package.
- Add a little bit of poultry seasoning for more flavor….it will taste like Thanksgiving in a sandwich!
- Serve over rice or mashed potatoes instead of on a bun.

I have never heard of these but wanted a shredded chicken sandwich for dinner. We didnโt have stuffing so I added ritz. To compensate for flavor I added poultry seasoning to the. Chicken and the crackers and added some dried minced onion. My family enjoy this. I will make this again.
I made this a couple times now. Last time was in the instant pot. So easy and good. I put the chicken, cream of chix soup and about a cup and a quarter chix broth in for 10 minutes
I’m 72 and have eaten these all my life, my mom was famous for them. Had no idea they were called Ohio Chicken sandwiches, but fits.
Delicious served over biscuits!
Can this be made ahead and crock pot kept in the fridge, or would it get mushy when reheating?
Another recipe used canned chicken so I’m happy I found yours and I will be trying it soon.
Can I make these a day before ?
Can I use boneless breasts and boneless thighs? Will it taste just as good?
Being that I grew up in north western and west central Ohio I had no idea this was an Ohio thing. I just assumed it was an everywhere thing LOL
This was so good, thank you! I grew up in Ohio and my grandma used to make it for me. She has since passed so thank you for posting this. I have been looking for this exact recipe for some time.
Thanks for the recipe! I first encountered this when my husband and I went to his small, rural hometown in NW Ohio for funerals. His home parish always served a meal to the attendees after the funeral, and this was *always* featured. It is warm and comforting, just like the nice people in Tiffin.
Love this simple recipe! Thanks so much for sharing. ๐
Any recommendations on some good sides to accompany the sandwiches?
Does this have to have a filler? Iโm doing low carb and canโt use the stuffing or crackers. Seems I remember my mother in law making these years ago without those fillers
Really needs seasoning, it was kind of bland alone.
