I’m not gonna lie.

I’m in love with sugar.

Apple cakes, fruit pies, double chocolate and even bite-size. (Like that rhyming, don’tcha?) I want it all. But where I don’t want sugar is in my spice mixes. Have you ever noticed that many store-bought spice mixes have sugar in them? Um…excuse me, but I’d rather have sugar in a frosted cookie. Not my seasonings.

When we started reading labels a few years ago and eating a paleo-style diet at mealtimes, I realized how many of the dressings, spices and condiments have sugar hidden inside. I didn’t like it one bit, so I set out to find my own homemade versions of seasoning blends. Taco seasoning, pasta salad seasoning, and today? A Homemade Chili Powder Recipe.

Homemade chili powder from scratch?

It’s not as hard as it sounds. I’m not hardcore about this. I don’t make my homemade chili powder from dried chilis. I simply buy a handful of spices at my favorite Aldi grocery store. They’re super cheap…only 99 cents a container.  Be sure to check the labels of whatever brand you choose to buy that there are no strange ingredients and no sugar hiding in there.

How to make homemade chili powder?

This homemade chili seasoning is made simply of paprika, oregano, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Add as much cayenne pepper as you’d like. This is what turns the heat and spice up! The recipe I give below makes 8 ounces.

How to store homemade chili powder?

Paprika and pepper keeps best in a cool, dark place, so I like to store my chili powder in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep for about a year in the fridge if you seal it up tightly. My favorite chili recipe calls for ½ a cup of chili powder (yes, half a cup…that is not a misprint!), so we go through this quickly!

Can you substitute any other spices for the cumin and cayenne pepper? I can’t eat spicy food. Why put this spice in the refrigerator when you don’t put the other spices in there. Thanks for the sweet potato chili. I Love sweet potatoes.

OMG! This is a lifesaver when I’m out of chili powder. It’s one of the staple in our household. Most of my recipes call for a chili powder. What’s best is that I have all of its ingredients on hand all the time. Thank you. Definitely worth to pin!
