Comforting Amish Oatmeal Pie that tastes remarkably like pecan pie. Brown sugar gives a deep, rich flavor to this sweet, simple pie that is a favorite Amish country recipe.
My favorite Amish Cooking cookbook is loaded with varieties of pies I had never even heard of. Pineapple pie, pudding pies, custard pies, molasses pie…just about any pie there is. It’s been fun to work through making them.
This old-fashioned Oatmeal Pie quickly became my kids favorite. It’s the ultimate in comfort food and the filling takes just 5 minutes to mix up. It tastes like a sweet version of baked oatmeal. And if you add ice cream, it’ll remind you of Little Debbie’s oatmeal cream pies.

This sweet pie bakes up soft and gooey. Every bite brought a different food to mind. A bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar. A cinnamon roll. Chewy oatmeal Cookies. Baked oatmeal. Oats are one of those versatile ingredients that are in so many comfort foods of ours. And this oat pie is one of my new favorites.
What is Oatmeal Pie made of?
During the Civil War, pecans were in short supply in the South, making them very expensive. People would substitute oats for the pecans, resulting in this delicious oatmeal pie that tastes like a mock pecan pie. Pecan pie has corn syrup, but this pie does not. It relies on white and brown sugar, plus butter and eggs for the filling.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Eggs. Large eggs at room temperature. Room temperature eggs mix in best.
- Brown sugar and white sugar. For the perfect balance of sweetness (and no corn syrup!). The filling will remind you of a brown sugar pie, and I often mistakenly call this pie that name.
- Salted butter. If you only have unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the filling.
- Oats. Old fashioned rolled oats. I don’t recommend quick oats with this recipe.
- Half and half. Use a high fat milk for the best texture. Half and half or whole milk are the best options.
- Vanilla Extract. May I recommend a bourbon vanilla extract? ๐
- Pie dough. I recommend our homemade pie crust, but if you’d like a shortcut, use store-bought pie crust. If you make our homemade crust, only make half of it since you’ll just be needing a single crust. I’ve not tried this yet with our oatmeal pie crust, but double the oats is not a bad thing, right?
How to Make Oatmeal Pie
- Prepare the pie crust. Again, make your own or use store bought, but you’ll need a single, unbaked pie crust for this recipe. Place it in a 9-inch pie plate. This isn’t a deep dish pie, so use a regular pie pan.
- Make the filling. This is one of the easiest pie fillings you’ll come across. Mix all of the ingredients in a large bowl. It takes less than 5 minutes.
- Bake. Mix all of the ingredients and pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell. Bake in a 350ยบF oven for 45-50 minutes. The center of the pie should look fully cooked and not seem overly “jiggly”. The pie will come out soft, but not so soft that it can’t be cut into slices.
Recipe Variations
- Add ½ cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts to the filling.
- Use all brown sugar for an amish brown sugar pie with oats.
- Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice.
- Love oatmeal raisin cookies? Add ½ cup raisins for oatmeal raisin pie!
Serving Suggestion
Allow the oatmeal pie to cool before you slice it. This will help it set so you can get clean slices. As you can see from the picture, there will be just a little bit of syrup that oozes out. And the scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream is a must!
Storage Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat by the slice in the microwave. It’s best served warm.
This pie freezes well. Freeze in a double wrapped airtight container for up to 3 months.

Ingredients
- 3 large eggs room temperature
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar 134 grams
- 1 cup light brown sugar packed, 210 grams
- 2 tablespoons salted butter softened, 28 grams
- 2/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats 75 grams
- 2/3 cup half and half (or whole milk), 170 grams
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 grams
- 1 9" unbaked pie shell
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350ยบ Fahrenheit. Line a 9-inch pie pan with an unbaked crust and flute the edges. 1 9" unbaked pie shell
- In a large bowl, combine the first 7 ingredients and whisk well. 3 large eggs, 2/3 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup light brown sugar, 2 tablespoons salted butter, 2/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats, 2/3 cup half and half, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pour into the prepared pie shell. Bake on the bottom oven rack for 50 minutes or until the pie is cooked through. The center should look set.
- Serve warm with ice cream.

This pie was ridiculous!! I made it for Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday and basically sucked down half of it before everybody else was done with their dinner…. Reminded us of my wife’s Grammy’s baked oatmeal from years ago. One of the best pies I’ve ever eaten–it will be a frequent return visitor.
I use brown sugar to make baked apples. They are soooo good.
