My kids have loved chai lattes for years, but only recently have I fallen in love with this flavor as well. This DIY chai latte powdered mix recipe was in my aunt’s handwritten cookbook, so I knew this year was the year to make it and keep it in the pantry for when that craving hit.
This Homemade Chai Latte Mix is perfect for when you want to make a large batch of chai. Keep a large batch of mix on hand for the cool weather season or package it up in cute little mason jars for holiday gifts.
About this homemade chai latte mix recipe:
- Flavor: Warm spices of cardamom, cinnamon and ginger. That’s what’s to love about a hot chai latte. The white pepper adds a hint of spice. You can double the pepper if you’d like a spicy chai.
- Texture: This recipe works best if you run the mix through a blender to get the ingredients as fine as possible. Your lattes will be smooth if you do this.
What is in chai latte powder?
This chai latte powder has everything needed to make a chai tea latte. All you have to do is add hot water or even hot milk.
This chai powder has creamer and milk powder for creaminess, both brown and granulated sugar for sweetness, instant tea for that classic tea flavor and spices to flavor the chai tea mix.
Spices in Chai
Chai is from India and commonly has cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, coriander and white pepper. You may also find nutmeg or allspice in recipes. Make your own chai spice mix at home for flavoring other cookies and cakes.
How to Make Homemade Chai Latte Mix
- Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Stir well to combine.
- Place the mixture in a blender (or a food processor). Blend until they are well combined and it makes a fine powder.
- Store in an airtight jar at room temperature for up to 5 months.

Add 2-3 tablespoons mix to about 10 ounces of hot water, milk or even black tea in a cute little mug. Mix until the powder is dissolved, then serve.
What is a dirty chai?
A dirty chai is a chai latte that has a couple of espresso shots in it. If you’re planning on making these, you could leave out the instant tea from the mix. Dirty chais are a popular coffeeshop drink and are amazing!
Recipe Variations
- Vanilla Chai Latte: Add a couple teaspoons of vanilla powder to the mix, or you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract after you’ve heated the drink.
- Extra Spicy Chai: Double the spices for a more flavorful chai. Or you can just increase one certain spice that you’d like to taste more.
- Switch up the flavored creamer if you’d like a different twist. Try a cinnamon creamer or even a caramel creamer.
- Iced Chai Latte: Heat about ½ cup of water and mix in the powdered chai until smooth. Then add ice cubes and milk to cool the drink.
- Leave the instant tea out. If you know you’ll always be adding this to espresso, or if you want to use a tea bag, simply leave the instant tea out.
- Add star anise to the top of a latte for a gorgeous look.
- If you want to use a different sweetener other than sugar, you could leave out the sugar and then when you make the latte, add maple syrup or honey.

- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsweetened instant tea
- ¾ cup powdered French Vanilla non-dairy coffee creamer
- ¾ cup powdered non-dairy creamer
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder
- 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 5 grams
- 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom 5 grams
- 2 teaspoons ground cloves 5 grams
- 1 1/4 teaspoons ground white pepper 3 grams
- 1 ¼ teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Stir well to combine.
- Place the mixture in a blender (or a food processor). Blend until they are well combined and it makes a fine powder.
- Store in an airtight jar at room temperature for up to 5 months.
- To prepare, add 2-3 tablespoons mix to about 10 ounces of hot water, milk or even black tea in a mug.
- To make a dirty chai, add 2 shots of espresso to the above drink.
Notes
This makes about 5 cups of latte mix.
