If you’re looking for a unique flavor for your next chicken dinner, try this Asian inspired BBQ Chicken. An easy homemade barbecue sauce covers this baked (or grilled) chicken.
When think of baked chicken, I think of cornflake chicken or parmesan chicken. Those two (along with buttermilk fried chicken) are some of our favorite family dinners. Today we’re switching things up a bit!
Chicken has always been a staple in our home. It’s so easy to stock up on it when there are sales, and the possibilities, like this honey sesame chicken, are endless! Today we’re talking barbecue, but not your normal Sweet Baby Ray’s style. This is a unique Asian BBQ that your family will love.
What is asian bbq sauce?
Asian bbq sauce is similar to our traditional bbq sauce since it has ketchup and brown sugar. In Asian inspired sauce, however, you’ll find rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, soy sauce and ginger. These all give the barbecue sauce a delicious flavor. It’s so different than traditional smoky barbecue sauce, but is such a nice change.
Try an authentic Asian BBQ Sauce.
How to Make Asian BBQ Sauce
Whip up this sauce while the chicken is baking. It takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish.
- In a medium pot over medium heat warm oil and add in green onions.
- Cook onions until softened and slightly brown, about 6 minutes.
- Add in garlic and ginger, then cook an additional 30 seconds before adding remaining sauce ingredients.
- Bring sauce to a simmer and lower heat to medium low.
- Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove pot from heat and let cool to thicken.
Do I have to peel ginger?
This recipe calls for fresh ginger. If you’ve never used fresh ginger, you can read all about how to work with it here. You don’t necessarily need to peel ginger, but we almost always do. It really depends on how old the ginger is. Many times ginger that you’ll find in a grocery store is older, making it more necessary to peel.
We use a microplane grater to grate the ginger. If any juices form while you are grating the ginger, be sure to add those in to the sauce, too. There’s so much flavor there!
Which piece of chicken is healthiest?
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are the lowest in fat of all the chicken choices. You can of course use bone-in chicken or skin-on chicken if you’d like. This barbecue sauce will work for any type of chicken. You could also use it on pork.
Barbecue Chicken Recipe in the Oven
It’s not exactly grilling temperatures yet…although it is getting really close. We baked this chicken in the oven. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake it for 30 minutes covered, then uncovered for another 10 minutes or until the chicken tests done.
To save time, make the barbecue sauce while the chicken is baking. That step keeps this total recipe time under 1 hour.
When baking chicken do you cover it with foil?
If you want chicken to stay as juicy as possible, cover it with foil the first 30 minutes of baking. This helps seal in the juices making extra juicy chicken.
Keep the chicken uncovered after you put the barbecue sauce on so the sauce can thicken and bake on the chicken.
What temperature should chicken be cooked to?
Chicken should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 165ยบ Fahrenheit. Use an internal probe thermometer and insert it into the thickest part of the chicken breast to check the temperature.
Chicken should no longer be pink and juices should run clear.
**We LOVE our Thermoworks ThermaPen to quickly test meat temperatures. This probe thermometer is AMAZING.ย Get it here.**
Can I grill chicken instead of baking it?
Yes! If you love grilled chicken, brush the chicken with a little bit of this barbecue sauce, then grill it. Continue to brush the chicken with sauce as it grills. Remember to check the temperature of the chicken and make sure it is 165ยบ Fahrenheit.
What should I serve with Asian chicken?
This chicken is delicious served with rice and green beans. If you happen to have leftovers of this chicken, serve it over a salad or on a homemade hamburger bun. You can even shred it up for nachos or put it on pizza. It’s really versatile!

Yum! This looks sooo good! Any chance this could be crock-potted or is this best done in the oven?
I love it! The best BBQ chicken I have eaten <3
So easy to make. substituted fresh ginger w powder, added sweet soysauce cause we dont usually keep sugar around the house( no need to, i dont bake) and I grilled this in a pan. kids loved it! thanks for sharing!
We left out the vinegar and added a little more brown sugar. Other than that the flavor was amazing. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
I am getting ready to make this!!
Just want to be sure about the ginger: โ1/3 cup grated ginger (with any juice)โ. Thatโs a lot of ginger! is 1/3 c what it is to be?
Thanks Julie!!
