Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
My family loves hard boiled eggs. But I used to hate making them. I never could seem to get consistency with how well the eggs would peel.
Use week old eggs…put them in cold water…boil them for a certain number of minutes. Everyone had their input on the perfect egg recipe, but I had different results, every time. Everything changed with the Instant Pot pressure cooker.
Hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot turn out beautifully, every time. There’s no guessing if you follow our simple method.
How do you hard boil eggs so they peel easily?
When someone asks how to get the perfect hard boiled eggs, I say the Instant Pot every single time. Use the 5-5-5 method (which we explain below) and you’ll have eggs that are creamy yellow inside and peel beautifully.
How many eggs can you boil in an instant pot?
You can fit about 8-10 eggs in a 6-quart Instant Pot.
The exact number will depend on how large your Instant Pot is. We place a trivet in in the pot and put as many eggs as we can on the rack.
There are egg racks which will hold about 6 eggs, but they also have stackable steamer racks to hold more. A steamer basket will also work. If you have more eggs than that, pressure cook them in batches.
How to Hard Boil Eggs in Instant Pot
We use the 5-5-5 method for cooking eggs in the Instant Pot.
What is the 5-5-5 method?
5 minutes high pressure, 5 minutes natural release, 5 minutes ice bath.
Here’s how to do it:
- Prepare. Place the pressure cooker on a solid surface such as the counter or stove. Place a trivet, basket or egg rack in the bottom of the Instant Pot liner. Add the 1 cup of water.
- Add Eggs. Place eggs carefully into the basket or trivet, being careful not to crack them.
- Cook for 5 Minutes. Close lid and set the vent valve to sealing. Press manual high pressure and set the timer for 5 minutes. Allow the Intstant Pot to work its magic.
- Natural Release for 5 Minutes. Allow the pressure to natural pressure release for 5 minutes. Quick pressure release any remaining pressure after 5 minutes.
- Ice Bath for 5 Minutes. Open the pot and place the eggs in a bowl of ice water. Allow the eggs to sit in ice water for 5 minutes. Then remove them, dry them and peel them.
See the 5-5-5 up there? Yes, it’s that easy to make Instant Pot eggs.
Why do you put boiled eggs in ice water?
Placing the eggs in a cold water bath helps the eggs to peel easily, but it also prevents the discolored yolk.
The strange greenish color that sometimes forms around hard boiled yolks is a reaction of the sulfur in the egg white and the iron in the yolk. By placing the warm eggs in ice water, it stops the cooking process and helps to stop the discoloration.
What to Make with Hard Boiled Eggs?
After you get the perfect hard boiled egg, you can store them in an airtight container for a breakfast or snack on the go. They’re great simply with salt and pepper.
Here’s a few other ideas of recipes you can make:
- egg salad for sandwiches
- Add the eggs to a lettuce salad
- Make deviled eggs
- potato salad
- potato egg casserole

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make soft boiled eggs in the instant pot?
Yes! Add cold water to the pot, add eggs, set valve to sealing position, set the IP to low pressure for 1 minute. Then let it natural release for 2 minutes, then quick release any remaining pressure and plunge into an ice water bath. Different altitudes will yield different results. Higher altitude may take more time on low pressure. Test with one egg until you get the exact results you’d like.
Help! How do I keep my eggs from exploding in the Instant Pot?
Allow the eggs to come to room temperature before pressure cooking. Use cold water in the pot. And make sure the eggs don’t have any cracks.
Can I stack the eggs to fit more in the pot?
Sure! This may cause some cracking, but I’ve had people tell me they’ve done up to 18 eggs with success.
