Are you a buffalo chicken lover? My husband will put buffalo wing sauce on anything and everything. But when I pull out the ingredients to make this recipe, I earn some serious love tank points!
What does buffalo chicken taste like?
Buffalo chicken is really an odd, unique flavor but it is tangy and spicy with vinegar undertones.
Is buffalo chicken spicy?
Yes! Some will say it is not that spicy, and it really depends on how much you like spicy food. If you are sensitive to spice, it is spicy. But if you LOVE spice, add some Frank’s red hot sauce to kick it up even more!
Best Chicken for Buffalo Chicken Dip
When I initially started making buffalo chicken dip, I always used canned chicken (drained). These days, however, I prefer using shredded chicken that I’ve cooked beforehand. We often buy a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store and shred that up for this recipe. You can also make our favorite roasted chicken recipe. That meat is already seasoned so it adds to the flavor of the dip. You can use any pre-cooked chicken you’d like for this recipe. I think even grilled chicken would be amazing!
Layered Buffalo Chicken Dip
Buffalo chicken dip has a very strange orange color. In fact, the color is the reason I stayed away from it for so long. It just didn’t look appetizing. You can mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and bake that way, or you can bake the dip in layers to try to have it resemble more of the buffalo chicken “look”. We’ll explain below how to do the layers. If you choose to mix it all together and bake, remember to reserve about ¼ cup of shredded cheddar cheese for sprinkling on top. Bake as the recipe below states.
How to Make Buffalo Chicken Dip

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a bowl, use a hand mixer to beat the cream cheese until smooth.

Add the ranch dressing and mix well. You can add blue cheese dressing if you’d like instead. Or use a combination of both dressings.

Spread the cream cheese mixture onto the bottom of an 11×7″ pan. We don’t worry about greasing the pan for this recipe.

In another bowl, mix together the chicken, wing sauce and ½ cup of shredded cheddar. We recommend using freshly shredded cheddar cheese. Pre-shredded cheese has a flour mixture on it to prevent it from sticking to itself in the packaging. However, that flour mixture tends to cause the dip to be extra greasy. Take a few minutes to shred your own cheese. It’s worth it!

Dollop and spread this over the cream cheese layer.

Top with the remaining cheese.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until it is bubbly and heated through.

Buffalo Chicken Dip in the Crock Pot
Can you make buffalo chicken dip in the slow cooker? Yes! This recipe makes only a small amount so I would suggest using a small slow cooker or doubling the recipe for a larger slow cooker. Layer in the slow cooker as the recipe below states, then cover and cook on low until it is heated through and bubbly (about 3-4 hours).
What to Serve with Buffalo Chicken Dip
When we first started eating buffalo chicken dip, we loved it with Chicken in a Biscuit crackers. Although we still like those crackers, we often find ourselves reaching for the celery instead. This is a very rich dip so the celery tones that down a bit. You can serve it with whatever crackers or veggies you’d like. It is also delicious with artisan bread or this everything Italian bread.

Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup ranch dressing
- 2 1/4 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
- 3/4 cup buffalo wing sauce
- 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (divided)

- crackers
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a bowl, use a hand mixer to beat the cream cheese until smooth.
- Add the ranch dressing and mix well.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture onto the bottom of an 11x7" pan.
- In another bowl, mix together the chicken, wing sauce and ½ cup of shredded cheddar.
- Dollop and spread this over the cream cheese layer.
- Top with the remaining cheese.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until it is bubbly and heated through.
- Serve warm with celery and crackers.
