Bacon Spinach Dip Recipe
Whether it is mini veggie pizzas, tortilla rollups, cheese and crackers or tomato sandwiches, I can never get enough of appetizers. I can make a whole meal off of these comfort foods. Am I right? Who really needs a main dish anyway? This easy bacon spinach dip is a great way to sneak vegetables in food that your kids will love. Why will they love this? Because…bread and bacon!
How to Make Spinach Dip
Here are the ingredients for spinach dip.
- This recipe calls for two boxes or 20 ounces of frozen spinach. Be sure that the spinach is defrosted and well drained before mixing up the dip. Otherwise your spinach dip will be watery and make the bread bowl soggy.
- To the spinach you’ll add mayonnaise and sour cream. Many will ask if you can use low-fat sour cream and/or mayonnaise. If you are used to using it, I say go for it! We prefer the full-fat versions so the dip is creamy. But the recipe will work with low-fat mayo & sour cream.
- The next ingredient is vegetable dip mix. there are many different brands and varieties, but we normally pick up Knorr vegetable dip mix. Use whatever variety you are used to, though.
- Water chestnuts give the spinach dip a little crunch. You can leave these out if you’d like. My kids prefer if I do leave them out. Be sure to shop the water chestnuts small if you do keep them in.
- Lastly…BACON! Because bacon makes everything better, right? Use traditional bacon or turkey bacon if you’d like a lower fat, lower calorie dip. Add in most of the bacon right into the dip when you are mixing it, but leave a few tablespoons to sprinkle on the top of the dip for a pretty presentation.
Spinach Dip in Bread Bowl
There’s nothing prettier than serving spinach dip in a bread bowl. I love the contrast in color and looks like such an impressive appetizer when you take it to a party. Buy a 1-pound bread loaf, slice off the top and hollow out around 2 cups of bread from the inside. Make sure you leave enough bread on the walls of the loaf so that the bread bowl holds up. You can save the pieces of soft interior bread to serve alongside the dip.
What to Serve with Spinach Dip
Anything goes when it comes what to serve alongside this dip. Veggies are the healthy option. Think carrots, celery and peppers. You can also serve your favorite crackers or pretzel sticks.

Ingredients
- 20 ounces frozen spinach (defrosted - 2 boxes)
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 16 ounces sour cream
- 1 envelope vegetable dip mix
- 8 ounces water chestnuts (drained and chopped)
- 10 slices bacon (cooked and roughly chopped)
- 1 round loaf sourdough bread
- crackers & pretzels for dipping (if desired)
Instructions
- Drain the defrosted spinach well until there is no excess water.
- In a large bowl, combine the drained spinach, mayonnaise, sour cream, vegetable dip, and water chestnuts.
- Add the bacon, reserving about ¼ cup for bacon for garnishing the top of the bread bowl.
- Mix ingredients together well, being sure that everything is combined.
- Cover and refrigerate dip for 2-3 hours before serving.
- If you'd like to serve the spinach dip in a bread bowl, take a large round loaf of sourdough bread and hollow out the center. Be sure to clear at least one or two cups of bread from the inside, while ensuring there's enough bread to create a wall. Add spinach dip into the hollow bowl and garnish with additional bacon before serving.
