Domino Brownies

It’s back to school season! Some of you may have just recently sent your kids back to school, but mine have been in for a month now and have already gotten progress reports. Time flies!

Today I’m sharing a fun way to spend time with your kids in the kitchen while at the same time sharpening their math and thinking skills.

Domino Brownies…an easy, edible activity that will make kids excited to be back in the classroom.

Let’s Make Domino Brownies

Start with aย Pillsburyโ„ขย brownie mix and follow the directions on the back of the box. Although normally we like fudgy brownies, I wanted a “cake-like” brownie so it would be easy to cut into perfect rectangles. To achieve this, I added an extra egg.

Mix up the brownies and pour them into a greased 9×13 pan.

Allow the brownies to bake for about 27 minutes at 350 degrees F and then cool them completely.

Frosted Brownies

Frosting brownies couldn’t be easier with the newย Pillsburyย Filled Pastry Bags. Have you had the chance to try these? The kids loved piping swirls!

For domino brownies, we used the Filled Pastry Bags just a little differently. Frosting brownies in a pan can be a little tricky, but using the Filled Pastry Bags make it a breeze.

Let the kids pipe lines of frosting over top the brownies, then use an offset spatula to smooth the top of the brownies. Less mess = a win for mom!

Place the pan of frosted brownies into the fridge to allow the frosting to set slightly. This will allow you to cut nice, straight lines for your dominos.

Decorate the Brownies

Once you’ve cut the brownies into rectangles (ours were about 1.5″ x 3″), use a toothpick to draw a line in the middle of the rectangle, as a domino has.

Then use mini white chocolate chips or marshmallow bits to make the numbers on the dominos.

We started by making 3 or 4 double dominos, then made the numbers we needed so that the dominos could “connect”.

And simple as that, you have an edible game for family game night or use the domino brownies to practice addition and subtraction facts.

The reward for correct answers? A brownie, of course!

Ingredients

  • 1ย  Pillsbury brownie mix
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 large eggs (or 3 for cake-like brownies)
  • 1 Pillsbury Filled Pastry Bag chocolate flavor
  • Mini white chocolate chips or mini marshmallow bits

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 baking pan with non-stick spray.
  • Prepare the brownies according to the package directions, adding a third egg only if you'd like cake-like brownies.
  • Bake for 27 minutes or until the brownies test done in the middle.
  • Allow the brownies to cool completely.
  • Once the brownies are cool, use the Filled Pastry Bag to pipe chocolate frosting in lines across the top of the brownies.
  • Use an offset spatula or knife to smooth out the frosting.
  • Place the brownies in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes so the frosting can set a little, which will make the brownies easier to cut.
  • Cut the brownies in rectangles (about 1.5"x 3"). Wipe the knife on a paper towel between each cut to keep the lines smooth and straight.
  • Place the cut brownies on a flat baking sheet.
  • Take a toothpick and draw a line to divide the "domino".
  • Use mini white chocolate chips or marshmallow bits to make the number dots on the dominos.
  • Enjoy practicing math facts, playing dominos, and especially eating the brownies.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
