Today’s dinner recipe is all about traditional comfort food in the form of an easy Italian casserole. Why do I love this baked ziti recipe? This is one of my favorite Italian recipes because it is simple, makes a large serving, and is perfect for sharing with family and friends.

When I need to make a meal for a family who has a new baby or has had sickness, this is the recipe I turn to, along with our everything Italian bread. It’s kid-friendly and it’s easy! Just as easy as our ravioli lasagna and as delicious as our Italian vegetable soup.

With all of the cheese and sour cream, you end up with a creamy, cheesy casserole with a classic lasagna flavor. Because I love pasta sauce, I usually end up topping my portion with additional sauce. Just for that extra punch of slow-simmered flavor.

Ingredients Needed

This Italian casserole has pantry and freezer staples. No strange ingredients that will have you running last minute to the grocery store!

ingredients for an italian casserole on a table

  • When I originally posted this Italian casserole recipe, it was a baked ziti casserole. Ziti can sometimes be hard to find, so any tube pasta will work.
  • Ground beef is kid friendly, but ground Italian sausage, ground chicken or ground turkey will work as well.
  • My favorite marinara sauce is Rao’s marinara, but use a spaghetti sauce that you like the flavor of.

How to Make this Italian Casserole

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and onion together until the meat is no longer pink. Drain off the fat. Add the spaghetti sauce and stir the beef mixture to mix.

  1. While the meat mixture is cooking, boil ziti according to package directions in another pot.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. Spread half the noodles in the bottom of the dish. Layer the provolone cheese, sour cream and then half the sauce on top. Add the rest of the ziti. Sprinkle 6 ounces of shredded mozzarella over top the ziti.

How many servings does this make?

This Italian casserole serves 10-12 people making it a great potluck casserole. Don’t have that many to serve?  Split it into two smaller 8×8 pans and give one away. Divide the remaining casserole into lunch portions and freeze for your hubby to take to work or children to take to school.

Can you make this Italian casserole in advance?

Assemble the Italian casserole and freeze to bake at another time. Wrap the pan in plastic wrap, then wrap again in aluminum foil. Then freeze for up to 8 weeks.

The day before you want to bake it, allow the casserole to defrost in the refrigerator overnight. Take the casserole out of the fridge one hour before baking, then bake as the recipe suggests. Make sure it is heated through to at least 165ºF in the center of the casserole.

Is ricotta a good sub for the sour cream? I personally do not like sour cream so I think this may be a good idea! Thoughta?

Great recipe. But Alert!! The 9 x 13 pan is too small or you need to use a DEEP dish 9 x 13!!! I used the exact amounts and it is about an inch too high:-)

Tasted Amazing. We added this recipe to our recipe card box. The only suggestion I would have for those making this dish is to treat “12 slices or provolone” as 6-8 ounces, “slice” is an arbitrary measurement. Also when you get to step 7 the order you should layer is sauce, sour cream then provolone cheese lastly. the reason for this is if you put provolone first over noodles the the sauce and sour cream sits on top of provolone and does not have a chance to fill in the space in and around the bottom layer of noodles. this… Read more »
